The INSIDER Summary:

  • A vacationer in North Carolina discovered a new
landform off the coast of the Outer Banks.
  • Using his drone, he captured incredible aerial
    photos of the new island.
  • According to local officials, however, the island could
disappear soon since the North Carolina coastline changes
    constantly.

Thanks to his enthusiasm for drone photography, Chad
Koczera
discovered a new island off the coast of North Carolina,
according to CNN.

Koczera, who was collecting seashells on a nearby beach,
noticed the landmass and decided to fly his drone over the area.
His pictures revealed a sandbar-like area that had not
previously been identified.

The sandbank, which was nothing but a little hunk of sand a
few weeks ago, grew to an island about a mile in length, and
is located near Cape Hatteras, part of the Outer Banks. It
is now being explored by visitors, some of whom have nicknamed it “Shelly Island.”

Due to a variety of factors, including sea-level rise, urban
development, and storm damage, the future of the Outer Banks is
unclear. In fact, it is increasingly common for sandbars and
landmasses, like Koczera’s discovery, to form and disappear along
the coastline.

Koczera’s Instagram is filled with drone photography, so
there’s no telling what he might discover next.
